Cortez, CO : No serious injuries were reported after a collision on Tuesday, August 22, 2017

No serious injuries were reported after a collision Tuesday at the North Broadway and Lebanon Road intersection in Cortez.

According to a police report, Cortez resident Kelly Boren crashed into a car being driven by Mary Bauman, also of Cortez, about 5:55 p.m. Boren told police officers that she was driving north on Broadway at between 35 and 45 mph when Bauman pulled out in front of her from Lebanon Road, and the two vehicles collided. Bauman was transported to Southwest Memorial Hospital after complaining of neck pain, but hospital staff reported she was not seriously injured.

Bauman told police she thought Boren was about to turn right onto Lebanon, so she proceeded from the stop sign onto North Broadway. Boren said she had no time to stop before colliding with the other vehicle.

After responding police officers determined that she was not injured, they issued Bauman a citation for failing to yield the right of way at a stop sign.

Boren’s Chevy Equinox and Bauman’s Toyota Corolla were both towed. Crew members from the Cortez Fire Protection District removed the driver’s door on Bauman’s car to help her get out, since that side of the vehicle was heavily damaged. Boren’s Equinox also had severe damage on its front end.

The intersection at North Broadway and Lebanon Road has gone through several phases of construction in the past year, in part to make the highway safer. Lights and a median were installed on the highway, as well as turning lanes and a pedestrian crosswalk at the intersection. Contractors for the Colorado Department of Transportation project continue repaving work on a stretch of U.S. Highway 491 north of Lebanon Road.
