Alton, IL : Teenage girl ejected from vehicle in crash on Humbert Road in Alton Wednesday morning, March 15, 2017

A 19-year-old driver was ejected from her sport utility vehicle Wednesday morning after it ran off the road and struck a tree, felling a large branch onto the victim.

Several passing motorists stopped to help the young Alton woman by lifting the log to keep its weight off her until Alton firefighters arrived.

The woman suffered critical injuries, said Pfc. Dan Ludwig of the Alton Police Department.

After paramedics treated the woman at the scene, in the 3300 block of Humbert Road in northern Alton, an Alton Fire Department ambulance took the victim to Alton Memorial Hospital. An ARCH Air Medical Services air ambulance subsequently flew her to a St. Louis hospital, Ludwig said.

Someone called 911 at 10:45 a.m. to report the single-vehicle crash.

A Telegraph photographer at the scene said the woman’s Ford Explorer XLT was traveling north on Humbert Road when it left the roadway at Valley Court, taking out a fire hydrant before crashing into a large tree at a residence and ejecting the driver.

The SUV then continued traveling several yards, then crashed into a utility pole, cracking the pole.

According to the Telegraph photographer, who was on the scene a few minutes after the crash, the Explorer lost the rear, driver’s side wheel and parts of the vehicle were strewn across the roadway.
