Hazleton, PA : Police ID teen killed in Butler crash on Tuesday, June 13, 2017
Butler Twp. police have identified the teenager who died during Tuesday afternoon’s crash in Drums.
Police said Justin Pinzaru, 17, of Trinity, Florida, was a passenger in the vehicle, occupied by three other teenage boys whom police did not identify.
He and another passenger, a 17-year-old from Hazleton, were not wearing their seat belts and were ejected from a 2007 Subaru Forester during a crash in the area of 330 S. Old Turnpike Road around noon Tuesday.
Pinzaru died at the scene and the 17-year-old was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest via medical helicopter with severe injuries, police said.
Police arrived to find the vehicle in the road with damage.
The driver, a 16-year-old from Drums, wasn’t injured, while a second 16-year-old from Drums was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazleton for evaluation.
An autopsy on Pinzaru on Wednesday determined he suffered multiple traumatic injuries due to the crash, though his manner of death is pending further police investigation.
Luzerne County Deputy Coroner Jeff Stock said Pinzaru was in the Hazleton area visiting when the crash occurred, around the time local schools dismissed for the day.
Butler police are being assisted by the Pennsylvania State Police’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Specialist Unit and the Forensic Service Unit.
Valley Regional Fire and EMS, American Patient Transport Systems Inc., Sugarloaf Twp. EMS, Hazle Twp. Fire, and the Luzerne County Coroner’s Office responded and assisted.
