Lansing, MI : SC man charged in death of Michigan woman killed in wreck near Hamlet on Thursday, 22nd September 2016
A South Carolina man is facing a charge after troopers say he caused a wreck that left one person dead and two others injured.
According to the N.C. Highway Patrol, 27-year-old Anthony Frank Chavis, of Bennettsville, was driving 65 mph in a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado, southbound on N.C. 38, “exceeding a safe speed for the then-existing conditions of rain (and) wet roadways…with defective unsafe tires,” when he crossed the center line and crashed head-on into a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu.
The driver of the car, 57-year-old Shelly Volders of Au Gres, Michigan, died at the scene, officials told the Daily Journal.
The incident happened just after 1 p.m. Thursday near 1804 N.C. 38, about 2.65 miles south of the Hamlet city limits.
Two passengers in the car, David Wayne Freehling and Abby Volders, were both injured and initially taken to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst. However, FirstHealth officials said the two were later transferred to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
Their conditions were unknown at press time.
Troopers said the car was travelling approximately 40 mph, with Freehling in the front and Abby Volders in the back. They were also both from Au Gres, Michigan.
The accident report did not detail the extent or type of injuries the passengers sustained.
Chavis was taken to Sandhills Regional Hospital in Hamlet where he was treated, released. He was later arrested and charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.
Troopers say the tires on Chavis’ truck had very little tread.
Hamlet Fire and Rescue, the Hamlet Police Department, Richmond County EMS and FirstHealth EMS also responded to the crash.
Chavis was released on a $5,000 secured bond late Thursday night and is scheduled to appear in Richmond County District Court on Oct. 12.
Online records show he has no other pending charges or past convictions in North Carolina.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.
