Gainesville, FL : 2 UF students die in car crash in Okeechobee Sunday, March 5, 2017

Two University of Florida students were killed in a car accident Sunday in Okeechobee.

Caroline Celeste Alfano, 20, and Nicole Scherten, 23, were stopped at a stop sign on Southeast 128th Avenue when Joseph David Lagrego, 22, struck the rear of their vehicle.

Scherten, of Germany, was pronounced dead at the scene. Alfano, of Boca Raton, was pronounced dead at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center.

Lagrego, of Englewood, was transported to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. Investigators are awaiting the results of toxicology tests standard in such crashes.

The accident caused a chain reaction that hit two other vehicles. The occupants in those vehicles were uninjured.

On Monday, UF President Kent Fuchs wrote on Twitter, "Just learned two wonderful UF students died in a car accident driving home to S FL for Spring Break. We miss and love you all. Pls be safe."

UF's spring break began Saturday.

A visitation for Alfano is Friday, 3-7 p.m., at Babione Funeral Home in Boca Raton. The funeral service will be Saturday, 10-11 a.m., at Our Lady of Lourdes.
