No one was seriously injured Tuesday after a head-on collision between an SUV and a log truck on Washington Post Road, but one driver was cited.
The wreck occurred around 3 p.m. at the Bachelor Creek Bridge headed toward Vanceboro from New Bern.
According to the Highway Patrol, the SUV crossed the center line of the two-lane road and struck a log truck driven by 40-year-old J. Guadalupe Urietacampos. Urietacampos was not injured and was able to escape the truck before it caught fire.
The SUV driver, who was identified as 17-year-old Shaundre Mims, a West Craven High School student and football player, was taken to CarolinaEast Medical Center and treated for minor injuries, then released.
Mims was charged with driving left of center, according to the Highway Patrol.
The log truck was left with its cabin crushed and a few brown logs charred after catching fire after the crash. The SUV had a smashed front end and windshield and was resting against a guard rail.
Officials had the highway blocked from just beyond Mackilwean Turf Farm all the way up to just beyond the bridge and scene of the crash and spent several hours clearing the road of vehicle parts, wood, oil and other materials.
