Greenville, North Carolina
A 19-year-old man was killed in a car crash Thursday in Rocky Mount, according to authorities.
Lt. Ryan Hepler of the Rocky Mount Police Department said officers responded to a single-vehicle accident at 2:34 p.m. on Thursday on West Raleigh Boulevard at South Wesleyan Boulevard near the bridge on U.S. 301.
Hepler said the driver was traveling on West Raleigh Boulevard, veered off the right side of the road and collided with the bridge support.
Hepler said the driver died at the scene of the accident. He said the cause of the accident is still under investigation. Police would not release the name of the driver. Friends of the victim’s family identified the driver as Xavier Wiggins.
The Rev. James D. Gailliard, pastor of Word Tabernacle Church in Rocky Mount, said Wiggins attended Nash Community College and his family are active members at Word Tabernacle Church.
“He was a kind, quiet, polite, well-mannered and bright young man, who was active in our youth ministry,” Gailliard said. “This is just a tradegy for the community and the family. We’re going to do everything we can to help pull them through.”
