The Texas Department of Public Safety investigated a crash involving multiple vehicles Tuesday afternoon, including one Lufkin Police patrol unit.
The crash occurred around 5 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Timberland Drive and Paul Avenue. According to a DPS media release, the Lufkin Police patrol unit, a 1984 Chevrolet pickup and a 2001 Toyota pickup were facing north on Timberland Drive, stopped for the traffic signal. A 2018 Kia, also traveling north on Timberland Drive, struck the Toyota in the back, which caused a chain reaction. The Kia also caught fire, but was put out by fire extinguishers.
The DPS released the drivers of each vehicle, identifying the Kia’s driver as Carmen Carrell, 80, of Lufkin. Carrell was apparently not injured during the crash. The Toyota’s driver, Martin Ramirez, 72, of Lufkin; the Chevrolet’s driver, Badillo Gamboa, 74, of Lufkin; and the Lufkin Police officer, Jeremy Charvoz, 36, were transported to CHI St. Luke’s Hospital in Lufkin for possible treatment. The extent of their injuries is unknown.
Following the crash, Lufkin Police, Lufkin firefighters, Angelina County Pct. 1 Constable Tom Selman and DPS troopers directed traffic as wreckers worked to clear the scene.
