A single-vehicle crash in the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 early Sunday morning left one person dead and another in critical condition.

Four members of a Massachusetts family were on their way back home after visiting the Madawaska area when the vehicle they were traveling in crashed, Trooper Cooper Plaisted of the Maine State Police said early Sunday afternoon.

Keon Ebron, 27, of Mattapan, Massachusetts, who was a passenger in the seat behind the driver, was ejected from the vehicle and flown to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor by LifeFlight, Plaisted said. Ebron was listed in stable but critical condition, he said.Sonja Ebron and another passenger, Peta Thompson, 19, of Boston, suffered minor injuries, Plaisted said. Both women were treated at Penobscot Valley Hospital in Lincoln and then released, he said.

Plaisted said that the crash happened about 6:40 a.m. near mile marker 238, when Sonja Ebron dozed behind the wheel. Her vehicle left the highway and rolled twice before coming to a rest on its wheels in the median.

Plaisted said that the interstate temporarily was shut down to allow the LifeFlight helicopter to land and depart.
