SALEM, MA : Woman, twin daughters injured in Salem hit-and-run on Sunday, 30th October 2016

A suspected drunken driver has struck a 36-year-old woman and her twin 10-year-old daughters who were crossing a street during Salem’s crowded Halloween festivities.

Police say the victims were heading to a parking garage at about 8 p.m. Sunday when they were struck by a car that drove on.

Authorities say the victims’ injuries were serious but not life-threatening. Two were taken to a local hospital while a third was taken to a Boston hospital.

The driver, 52-year-old Dexter Mitchell, of Beverly, later returned. He was held on $2,500 bail after pleading not guilty Monday to charges including drunken driving.

Mitchell’s attorney called the accident unfortunate but said there is no evidence of carelessness.

Salem, site of the 17th century witch trials, draws tens of thousands of visitors on Halloween weekend.
