Three people who were in a stolen Jeep Cherokee died after the driver sped away from police and crashed into a tree in Springfield, police said.
Two others were injured in the crash, police said. All were between 17 and 20 years old, police said.
The crash happened about 8:12 p.m. Tuesday after a state police trooper spotted the Jeep, which was stolen in Milford, Conn.
“Preliminary investigation shows that State Police officers encountered the Jeep Cherokee prior to the crash. The Cherokee sped off but was not pursued by the officers,” Springfield police said. “It was reported that the Jeep Cherokee was traveling at a high rate of speed, possibly 60-plus mph. The Jeep was traveling west on Union Street, traveled through the intersection at Maple Street then the driver lost control of the car and slammed into the tree at a high rate of speed.”
Police said a male and two females died from their injuries.
“The two other passengers in the Jeep Cherokee were brought to the Baystate Medical Center where they are both in critical condition,” police said.
The identities were not released pending next of kin notifications, police said.
State police, city police and the Hampden County District Attorney’s Office are investigating.
