Jacksonville, FL : Grandfather dead after SUV rollover crash On Thursday December 24 2015
A grandfather is dead after the SUV he was driving flipped on top of him just hours before Christmas.
Three other people were in the SUV with Jerome P. Greene, 43, when his SUV crashed in a quiet Westside neighborhood on Christmas Eve.
It happened on Melvin Road and Redstone Drive. Greene’s son, Christopher Harris, said his parents had just come into town that day for Christmas. He was in the SUV with his father when it flipped.
“It’s probably going to hit me later. Right now I’m kind of still in shock, I guess,” said Harris.
He said he can’t believe he made it out with just some scrapes and bruises.
Right now I’m trying to get home and go see my daughter and hug her and kiss her,” he said.
JSO said Greene, the driver of the SUV, got in a minor hit-and run, scraping the side of another car, but kept going down Redstone Drive.
JSO Lt. Mike Eason said Greene sped past a stop sign at a high rate of speed and a car going westbound on Melvin Road crossed in front. That car hit the SUV, flipping it several times.
I just held on for dear life,” said Harris.
Greene was not wearing his seatbelt. He was thrown from the SUV and then it rolled on top of him.
I was looking around in the car to see where everybody was and then when I got out, it was like – I couldn’t see because I had dirt in my eyes and then I see him under the car,” said Harris.
Lt. Eason said another passenger in that SUV told JSO that Greene had been drinking and did not stop for the first crash because he was scared of getting in trouble.
One of the passengers in the SUV said that the driver of the SUV had been drinking and didn’t want to stop for that minor crash because he’d been drinking. And we see that a lot on Christmas Eve and on New Years,” said Lt. Eason.
