South Carolina Highway Troopers report they are investigating a fatal collision involving three vehicles that occurred on SC Highway 72 Tuesday.
The collision reportedly occurred on SC 72 at US 221 in Greenwood County at about 8:45 p.m.
According to troopers, a moped, sport utility vehicle, and pickup truck were traveling on US 221 in that order. The 18-year-old sport utility vehicle driver struck the moped and then the 26-year-old pickup truck driver struck the sport utility vehicle.
The driver of the moped was ejected from the vehicle and succumbed to his or her injuries at the scene, the report said. It is unknown if the driver was wearing a helmet.
According to the coroner, the cause of death was blunt force trauma.
The driver of the sport utility vehicle was seat belted and injured. He was transported to Self Regional by EMS. The pickup truck driver was seat belted and not injured.
The incident is under investigation by highway patrol. Charges are pending.
