Alachua County, FL : 2 Jacksonville men killed Monday in Alachua County crash on July 7, 2014
Two Jacksonville men were killed in an early morning accident Monday near Hawthorne after one of the men drove his van into the path of a semi-truck, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The driver, Fred Yassen, 65, and his passenger, Curtis Sinatra Pierce, 31, were pronounced dead at the scene by Alachua County Fire Rescue, a FHP report said. The accident happened at 6:20 a.m. almost three miles north of Hawthorne on U.S. 301.
Yassen was driving a 1999 Ford Windstar van south on U.S. 301 while Jeffrey Jerome Chever, 47, of Hawthorne, was driving a 2014 Mack Tractor-Trailer north on the same road. Yassen’s van drifted onto the west grass shoulder, and when he over-corrected, he lost control of the vehicle, the report said.
The van traveled across the median and into the path of Chever’s truck, the report said.
Chever sustained minor injuries from the accident, but was not taken to a hospital. The report listed that Yassen was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
