Westerly, R.I : 61-year-old woman died after car hit a stone wall and rolled over several times on Route 1 in Westerly on Monday, Nov 23, 2015
A 64-year-old woman died Monday after the car she was driving crossed the center line on Route 1, struck a stone wall and rolled over several times.
The woman, whose name has not yet been released, was heading north on Route 1 at 11:22 a.m. when she crossed over the median and into the south-bound lane but continued to proceed in a northerly direction in the southbound lane. The car then hit a stone wall in the vicinity of 336 Post Road, near the entrance to the former Westerly Drive-In, and rolled over several times, Police Chief Edward St. Clair said.
The woman was driving a 2015 Subaru Forester that was registered in New Jersey. She had a Florida driver’s license but is believed to have been living in the Misquamicut area, St. Clair said.
Two witnesses pulled the woman from the vehicle. Members of the Dunns Corners Fire Department and Westerly Ambulance Corps responded and administered aid to the woman, St. Clair said, but she was pronounced dead at The Westerly Hospital.
The police department’s accident-reconstruction officers are investigating to determine the cause of the accident. They will study the results of an autopsy as part of their investigation, St. Clair said.
The name of the woman is being withheld pending notification of her family.
