GAINESVILLE, FL : Two men were killed when they crashed their car into a roundabout in East Gainesville on May,Tuesday 2nd 2017
Two men were killed when they crashed their car into a roundabout in East Gainesville on Tuesday morning.
Police said they were going way too fast on NE 9th Street, which has a 30 mile per hour speed limit.
Megan Black, who lives off the street, was picking up pieces of the car from her yard. "I feel so bad for the families, to wake up on a Tuesday morning and know that their sons have died," she said.
Black said she heard the sound of an engine roaring. "Then what sounded like a bomb going off, it shook my whole house."
The BMW convertible crashed at the roundabout at NE 8th Ave. and 9th St. at around 12:30 Tuesday morning. The driver was 20 year old Kristian Barker and the passenger was 23 year old Matthew Nakamura.
"I cautiously came out to see what happened and I saw two BMW wheels on my porch," said Black.
The crash left a hole in her wall and car parts all over her yard, as well as her neighbors.
"There are parts of the engine, radiator in the back yard, debris on the roof, I don't know exactly what they are, but different plastic pieces of the car," Black said.
"It was incredibly fast, the tires squealed as they went around the turn to get onto 9th St," said witness Stevie Schlessman.
Police said the car flew into the air and hit a tree. "We could see the taillights go off in the distance and that's when my boyfriend said they went up in the air," Schlessman said.
Barker was ejected from the car during the impact. "I saw a man lying in the street, obviously badly injured, still alive," Black said.
Black said after the crash, she saw the speedometer on the car reading 130 miles per hour. "I mean the way that the tires, the wheels, flew, from about 50 feet from the tree, into my porch almost into my house I think they were going faster than 70, which is what the police anticipated," she said.
