An Amish man was killed Aug. 31 after a car ran into his carriage on Route 8 west of Dover.
Ervin D. Miller, 55, of Hartly was driving his horse-drawn buggy west on Route 8 at 8:05 p.m. when he turned left into a Royal Farms at the intersection of Hartly Road, said Master Cpl. Gary Fournier of the Delaware State Police.
As Miller turned, Fournier said, a car traveling eastbound on Route 8 ran into the buggy, ejecting both Miller and his wife, 55, who was a passenger, onto the roadway.
The car continued on Route 8 and possibly turned northbound on Pearsons Corner Road, Fournier said.
Miller was takent to Kent General Hospital where he was later pronounced dead; his wife was admitted in critical condition. During the crash, the horse came loose from the buggy and returned to the Millers’ farm. Fournier said he did not know whether the horse was injured.
The vehicle is described as a dark-colored, older-style passenger car that may have sustained considerable damage to the front bumper, hood, and window, Fournier said.
Route 8 in the area of the crash was closed for more than three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
