Baton Rouge, LA : Denham Springs man killed in fatal hit-and-run crash Sunday on I-12 westbound on Sunday, October 1, 2017
A Mississippi woman was arrested Sunday in a fatal hit-and-run crash near the Tangipahoa-St. Tammany parish line.
Deana Marie Collier, 52, of Sandersville, Mississippi, was booked on one count each of vehicular homicide and felony hit-and-run in the crash that claimed the life of Albert J. Watson, 59, of Denham Springs.
According to Louisiana State Police, the crash took place on Interstate 12 westbound shortly before 2 a.m.
State Police said Watson was driving a 2012 Chevrolet Impala in the right lane when he was struck from behind by a Toyota Avalon driven by Collier, forcing his car off the road.
Watson's car struck a tree and overturned, police said, and he suffered series injuries. He was transported to North Oaks Health Systems in critical condition and died a short time later.
Following the crash, State Police said, Collier drove about a quarter of a mile, turned off her lights and called her son. Police say Collier made no other calls or attempts to help Watson and was discovered by troopers a short while later.
Troopers said Collier "performed poorly" on a field sobriety test and was taken to North Oaks Health Systems, where she was treated for minor injuries.
After being released from the hospital, Collier was booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail.
