Three men travelling home to the Sacramento area from Oakland in a rental truck were the victims of a fatal vehicle accident Friday morning on Interstate 80 in Davis, Yolo County coroner’s officials said.Autopsies for Darius Austin Powe-Reed and Zan Djavan Lockhart, both 20-year-old Sacramento residents, and 30-year-old Lavell Elmore of Elk Grove are scheduled for Monday.
The crash took place at about 10:25 a.m. while apparently making an unsafe lane change on eastbound I-80 east of the Richards Boulevard offramp, according to Chief Deputy Coroner Robert LaBrash.California Highway Patrol Officer Bryan Konvalin gave the following account of the inciden
The victims’ vehicle, a 2007 GMC box truck, was traveling at about 65 mph in the slow lane when, according to witnesses, the driver attempted to merge into the middle lane and collided with a Mitsubishi Montero.
“The impact caused minor damage, but the driver of the GMC allowed the vehicle to veer to the right,” Konvalin said. “The driver applied the brakes, leaving skid marks, but was unable to stop the GMC before it left the roadway and collided with a tree.”Konvalin said the impact caused major damage to the truck, including a collapse of the engine compartment and partial collapse of the passenger compartment. The driver of the Mitsubishi was able to stop safely on the shoulder of the road, but all three occupants of the GMC were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the truck, Powe-Reed, 20, was wearing a seat belt. Lockhart and Elmore were not.
LaBrash said that there was no indication drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
Powe-Lee and Lockhart were students at Consumnes River College, according to their Facebook pages.
They played football together at Pleasant Grove High School in Elk Grove, where, as a senior in 2009, Powe-Lee was named a MaxPreps second-team all-Delta River League linebacker.
Originally from Brentwood, N.Y., Elmore graduated from Grambling State University in 2007,according to his Facebook page. He later worked for Children’s Methodist Home in Ruston, La., and for Credit Services in Columbia, S.C., until 2010.
CHP reports indicate the wreck blocked the slow lane of the freeway for about an hour before it reopened at around 11:30 a.m. The eastbound I-80 onramp at Richards Boulevard remained closed until about 12:30 p.m.
