LaGrange, GA : Woman hit by cruiser during wreck near Calumet and Roy Spinks drives on Friday, May 13, 2016

A woman was injured about 4 p.m. Friday after a sedan slammed into a deputy’s patrol car during a traffic stop, causing the cruiser to run into her.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Nathan Taylor said he was checking on a disabled vehicle in the turning lane of Lafayette Parkway near Calumet and Roy Spinks drives. The driver said she was OK, but as the deputy drove away, the sedan pulled off and crossed the westbound lanes of Lafayette Parkway, nearly causing a wreck, Taylor said. The sedan stopped on the side of the road next to Walmart Neighborhood Market.

Taylor said he turned around and pulled behind the sedan for a traffic stop. He spoke to the woman and said he smelled alcohol on her breath and she gave him a false last name.

As Taylor was in the cruiser and the woman stood in front of it, a westbound black sedan hit Taylor’s car, pushing it forward and causing it to hit her, said witnesses. Taylor said the force of the impact caused her roll over the hood of the vehicle.

The black sedan continued across all five lanes of Lafayette Parkway and off the opposite side of the road. It went up an embankment, hitting a tree and a fence before stopping.

The driver of the black sedan was extracted by fire and EMS officials and taken to WellStar West Georgia Medical Center for treatment.

An Air Evac helicopter landed in the LaGrange Mall parking lot and flew the woman to Columbus Medical Center, according to 911 records.

Taylor was uninjured.

The drivers’ names and conditions were unavailable as of press time.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the wreck.
