Trenton, FL : Bell woman dies after car veered off the road and hit several large oak trees in Gilchrist County on Saturday night, Oct 24, 2015
A fatal crash Saturday night in Gilchrist County resulted in the death of a Bell woman after her car veered off the road and hit several large oak trees, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.
Autumn D. Smith, 24, was pronounced dead at the scene, while 35-year-old Jesse Samaniego III, of Newberry, who was in the car with her, was transported to a trauma center for treatment with serious injuries, but was in stable condition Sunday, an FHP news release said.
Around 11:55 p.m. Saturday, Smith was driving a Ford Taurus south on U.S. 129 about five miles north of Trenton, according to FHP. Samaniego was in the front passenger seat. Early indications suggest Smith was traveling at a high rate of speed and driving through a long, left curve in the road.
Smith’s car started to yaw counter-clockwise due to the high rate of speed as she tried to negotiate the curve and then veered left across the lanes and onto the easternmost shoulder of the road, the news release said. Her car struck several oak trees, which first hit the right front of the car and then the right-side rear before the car rotated off the tree and came to a rest facing south along the street’s eastern shoulder.
