EAST LIVERPOOL,OH : Victim of fatal truck accident identified on June, Tuesday 27th 2017

An 84-year-old man has been identified by Liverpool Township police as the victim of a fatal crash last Wednesday evening on Price Street.

According to information released Tuesday by Chief Jayson Jackson, Demple L. Smith, Price Street, was killed when his pickup truck went off the roadway, ejecting him and trapping him underneath the cab.

His 11-year-old grandson told police that Smith had gotten into his 2007 Dodge truck at his Price Street home, shifted it into gear and started pressing on the accelerator but the truck was not moving.

The child told police he thought the vehicle might have been in neutral, but then it is suddenly took off out of the driveway, crossing over Price Street and over a wooded hillside.

He told police his grandfather tried to brake traveling down the driveway, but the truck had not stopped.

Another man who had been at Smith’s house said he heard tires skidding and saw the vehicle go over the hill, according to reports.

Police reported the truck traveled 106 feet down the driveway and 67 feet over the hillside, coming to rest behind a house on Valley Avenue, striking the corner of the house and a boat parked beside it.

Officers and first responders reported finding the vehicle on its side with Smith partially underneath and bystanders who had tried to lift the truck from his body using car jacks.

Although the highway patrol was notified, the investigation was turned back over to Liverpool Township police once it was determined the crash was on private property, according to reports.

The county coroner responded, as well as the township fire department due to initial reports of entrapment.
