Jacksonville, FL : Boy, 11, killed, older brother, stepbrother hurt in Wayne County crash on Friday morning, February 24, 2017

An 11-year-old boy died and his older brother and stepbrother were injured Friday morning in the crash of a pickup truck west of Jesup.

The 2000 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling east on Holmesville Road nearing U.S. 84 about 7:20 a.m. when it went off the right shoulder of the road, the Georgia State Patrol said.

The driver, Charles Mitchell, 17, over-corrected in driving back onto the road, and the truck traveled across two lanes and went off the other side, the state patrol said.

The truck hit a small tree then went into a spin causing the passenger side to hit a larger tree, the state patrol report said.

Christopher Mitchell, 11, was dead at the scene, and his stepbrother, Clayton Smart, 14, was trapped in the wreckage and had to be freed, the state patrol said.

Clayton Smart was airlifted to Memorial Medical Center in Savannah, and Charles Mitchell was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital in Jesup, Wayne County Sheriff John Carter said.

Carter said Charles Mitchell was “in very critical condition.”

The boys were likely going to school, Carter said. Charles Mitchell is in high school, Clayton Smart is in middle school and Christopher Mitchell was an elementary school student, he said.

Clayton Smart was the only one wearing a safety belt, the state patrol report said.
