MONTCALM TOWNSHIP, MI : Auger accident kills Montcalm County farmer on S. Johnson Road north of Pakes Road in Montcalm Township on Monday, 11th March 2019

A Montcalm County man is dead after becoming entangled in an auger on his farm.

It happened at a private farm on S. Johnson Road north of Pakes Road in Montcalm Township, north of Gowen.

The sheriff’s office says the wife of 42-year-old Jacob Fruchey found him around 7:02 p.m. Monday and called 911.

Investigators say Fruchey was using a farm tractor to drill holes into the frozen ground near a sheep barn to alleviate snowmelt flooding when his thick clothing got caught in the auger attachment. Deputies say the tractor and auger were still running when they arrived around 7:15 p.m., along with firefighters.

Fruchey died at the scene. Authorities do not believe alcohol or drugs played any role in the accident.
