BAINBRIDGE TOWNSHIP, MI : Alcohol suspected to be factor in head-on Berrien Co. crash on Wednesday, 9th January 2019

Police say alcohol was likely a factor in a Berrien County crash that sent two people to the hospital Wednesday night.

The crash happened near the intersection of Napier Avenue and Arent Road around 5:26 p.m. in Bainbridge Township, according to a release from the Berrien County Sheriff's Office. It was a head-on collision between a Nissan Sentra and a GMC Sierra.

After the two collided, the GMC went off the road, hit a utility pole and broke the pole in half.

The driver of the Nissan had to be extricated and was taken to the hospital for treatment. The GMC driver also was hospitalized. Police did not provide a condition for either driver or designate which of the drivers was suspected to be under the influence of alcohol.

As a result of the collision, traffic is being detoured around the scene, but the sheriff's department release said the Napier should reopen by early Thursday morning.

The Berrien County Sheriff's Office is still investigating the crash, and AEP is replacing the utility pole.
