Queens, NY : Man riding scooter hit by car in Queens early Saturday, April 9, 2016

A 21-year-old man is in critical condition after his motorized scooter was smashed by a car in Queens early Saturday, police said.

Michael Messina was on his red scooter — a wire basket affixed to the front — on Cooper Ave. near 73rd St. in Glendale about 3:45 a.m. when an Acura MDX traveling in the other direction veered into his lane and hit him head on.

Messina was rushed to Jamaica Hospital where he remained in critical condition Saturday.

The Acura MDX caught fire moments after the crash, but the driver, identified by police sources as Roberto Omivo, managed to escape unscathed, officials said.

Cops spent Saturday morning evaluating the scene, which included the burnt and pitted Acura, Messina’s smashed scooter and a blood trail that led to the shoulder, witnesses said.

Cops were determining if Omivo was drinking before the crash, police sources said.

The motorist scored a .071 on a field breathalyzer test. While he wasn’t legally drunk, he may be charged with driving while impaired, the sources said.
