Reno, NV : 2 killed, 1 arrested in fatal DUI crash on Sunday, February 5th 2017
Two people were killed and one driver was arrested after he allegedly struck a car with his pickup truck while driving drunk early Sunday morning in Sparks.
The driver of the truck, later identified as 22-year-old Jesus Rojo-Perez, was arrested on two counts of driving under the influence causing death. He also faces other traffic offenses, the Sparks Police Department said in a news release.
He was taken to Renown Regional Medical Center and treated for minor injuries. Investigators said they believe he was impaired at the time of the crash.
Meanwhile, a 28-year-old woman, who was driving the small car, was found dead at the scene.
Rojo-Perez’s 18-year-old passenger was also taken to Renown where he later died of his injuries.
The names of the two killed in the crash were not immediately released pending family notification, Sparks police said.
The crash was reported at about 1:46 a.m. near Rock Boulevard and Greenbrae Drive. When officers arrived, they found the two vehicles – a small 2-door car and a 4-door truck – with major damage. Both vehicles were found in the front yards of nearby homes.
Investigators said they believe Rojo-Perez was speeding in his truck along westbound Greenbrae Drive and did not stop at the stop sign on Rock Boulevard, striking a small car traveling southbound.
No pedestrians or residents were injured, Sparks police said in a news release Sunday.
Investigators said they plan on providing an update on the case, but it was not known when they would release more details. Sparks police were still investigating the crash.
“In light of this tragic event, we want to remind everyone to always use a designated driver, never drink and drive and encourage everyone to report drunk drivers, so that everyone reaches their destinations safely,” Sparks police said in the news release.
