Kia driver dies in SR-76 crash in Bonsall
A three-vehicle collision left one driver dead on state Route 76 in the Bonsall area Thursday, the California Highway Patrol said.
The crash occurred about 6:50 a.m. at Gird Road during a light rain.
A 36-year-old Oceanside man died after witnesses stopped, pulled him from his wrecked Kia Sephia and started CPR on him, CHP Officer Jim Bettencourt said.
He said witnesses saw the Kia driver going east at high speed until he lost control of the car on a curve. He clipped a westbound Nissan Altima and skidded sideways into the westbound lane.
The Kia then was broadsided by a Mercury Sable.
The Altima driver, a 48-year-old Temecula man, was not injured. The Sable driver, 42, also of Temecula, and his passenger went to a hospital with minor to moderate injuries, Bettencourt said.
It wasn’t clear whether the wet road was a factor in the collision.
Officers funneled traffic into the eastbound lanes in alternating directions, causing a major backup. The roadway was reopened by 10 a.m.
