An husband and wife from Petaluma died in a car crash in unincorporated Sonoma County Wednesday morning, officials said.
After 9 a.m., California Highway Patrol officers responded to a Chevy pickup truck with major front end damage facing northwest and blocking the northbound lane of Highway 121 west of Napa Road, said Anna Paulson, a CHP spokeswoman.
They also located a Ford sedan with major damage facing north, up on the right shoulder embankment.
The driver of the Ford, 78-year-old Richard Steinhart of Petaluma, was taken to a local hospital, where he later died, the CHP said. His passenger, Fay Steinhart, 72, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the truck, Christopher Shuman, a 27-year-old American Canyon resident, had minor injuries and stayed on the scene. It does not appear that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collision, which the CHP is investigating, Paulson said.
