Memphis, TN : Neighbor rescues toddler pinned under car on Wednesday, 24th August, 2016
A concerned neighbor sprung to action when he saw a child in danger.
A one-year-old child was hit by a car on East Gage Avenue after a family member backed over the child.
Memphis police officers said the child's aunt was backing up her car and didn't see the child run behind her.
The young boy was pinned underneath the car, screaming for help until a next door neighbor grabbed his tools, and said he did what he had to do.
"I ran down there to see what was going on," neighbor Johnny Jones said. "When I got down there, I saw the baby pinned up under the car."
Within a matter of seconds of hearing cries and chaos, Jones said he jumped into action.
"I thought the baby was hurt real bad," Jones said.
Seeing the child in pain, he grabbed a jack from the back of his truck and immediately went into rescue mode.
"I ran down there and jacked the car so they could ease the baby out without hurting the baby," Jones said.
Once he used the jack to lift the car off the boy, who was going into shock, Jones sat with the little boy until first responders arrived to help.
"It hurt me real bad," Jones said. "It hurt me real bad. I don't want to see nobody's child get killed like that."
The child was taken to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in critical condition.
"Pay attention to these kids all the time," Jones said.
Jones, who has two grandchildren, said he realizes it could have been his child. He said he would want someone else to help his child if he was in that situation. He's grateful he was in the right place and able to help.
"I'm not a hero. I was just helping," Jones said. "Y'all quit calling me a hero."
