Wrong-way driver causes fatal crash on I-95
State police said a wrong-way driver shut down Interstate 95 southbound near Lonsdale Avenue in Pawtucket from 3 until 4:50 a.m.
The head-on collision between exits 25 and 25 landed four people in the hospital.
Police say a woman in a Honda Civic was traveling north on I-95 southbound when she struck a man and two woman in a Chevy Equinox in the left lane. The woman in the backseat of the SUV died at Rhode Island Hospital from internal injuries.
The wrong-way driven was taken to Rhode Island Hospital with life-threatening injuries. She was unconscious and had multiple breaks to her legs when she was transported to the hospital.
Crews had to extract all the passengers from both vehicles. The male driver of the Chevy SUV and the front seat passenger were conscious, the woman in the passenger seat suffered multiple arm and leg injuries.
Police said road conditions did not play a factor. They're still unsure how the wrong-way driver ended up driving north on the southbound portion of the highway.
A truck driver saw the accident and parked behind the two cars to prevent other cars from crashing into them. State police call the truck driver a "Good Samaritan" for securing the scene until law enforcement arrived.
