Denver, CO : Car bursts into flame after crashing into a deer on I-25 early Wednesday morning, November 16, 2016

A car burst into flame moments after striking a deer on northbound Interstate 25 early Wednesday morning, authorities say.

The collision happened around 5:30 a.m. near the Greenland exit in Douglas County, said Trooper Nate Reid, spokesman for the Colorado State Patrol.

Firefighting efforts and cleanup took nearly two hours, according to Amy Ford, spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Video footage show flames leaping above the fully engulfed vehicle on the shoulder of the highway as cars and an oil tanker truck pass by.

No one was injured in the crash and subsequent fire, Reid said.

After the car struck the deer, the driver pulled over to the shoulder of the road, he said. The driver got out of his car as flames shot out from under the hood. The car was soon engulfed in flames, Reid said.

“This is not an uncommon time for wildlife crossings. This is absolutely the season for them,” Ford said. The department posts wildlife crossing warning signs because of the potential for collisions.

Ford said in the past decade, Colorado has recorded an average of 3,300 crashes between wildlife and vehicles each year, she said. In 2,600 of those crashes, drivers and passengers were injured and 33 of the collisions resulted in fatalities, she said.
