Indianapolis, IN : Trucker dies in fiery crash on I-65 in Johnson County on Wednesday morning, March 9, 2016
A truck driver died after crashing his rig on I-65 in Johnson County, south of Indianapolis Wednesday morning according to Indiana State Police.
The first trooper arrived on the scene at around 6:15 a.m. and found that a motorist had stopped to pull the driver from the cab.
“I saw the crash and just couldn’t drive by without stopping to help.” He later said, “when I got to the cab of the truck the trailer was blazing, it was burning me, but I knew I had to get him out,” said Bryan Corns of Crown Point, Indiana.
Firefighters and paramedics who arrived on scene treating the victim who was taken to a hospital where he died a short time later.
The initial investigation has determined the semi driver drove off the road, struck a guardrail and then went about 50 feet off the road where the rig hit a tree and then caught fire. It’s not known what caused the driver to veer off the highway.
The fire quickly spread to the grass and trees in the area before being contained by firefighters. The southbound lanes of I-65 were closed for about 90 minutes.
The semi was hauling liquid protein in large plastic containers, there were no hazardous materials on board.
The victim’s name is being withheld until next of kin can be notified.
