Springfield, IL : Car crashes into Korean United Presbyterian Church on Friday, 20th December, 2019

The Korean United Presbyterian Church, 2501 Sangamon Ave., sustained heavy damage after a car crashed through it Friday afternoon.

According to Springfield Police Lt. Chris Russell, a 76-year-old man apparently in the middle of a medical emergency was driving the car. The car was traveling north on Henley Road around 2:05 p.m. at a “considerable amount of speed.” It crossed Sangamon Avenue before jumping the curb, plowing through a fence and crossing a grassy field before penetrating the exterior wall of the church.

The vehicle ended up inside the chapel, coming close to reaching the pulpit. Russell said a “considerable amount of damage” was done to the interior. But most of the exterior brick appeared to be spared as the point of contact fit near perfectly between two long, parallel windows.

No one was in the church at the time of the crash. The driver had to be extricated from the vehicle. He was transferred to Memorial Medical Center with minor injuries and was in stable condition.
