One woman was killed Monday evening near Hanford when her car ran a stop sign, hitting a palm tree and igniting in flames, the California Highway Patrol said.

The 27-year-old driver succumbed to her injuries after she was transported to Kaweah Delta Medical Center. For an unknown reason, the woman did not stop at the intersection of 7th and Houston avenues around 6 p.m., the CHP said.

When her Lincoln Navigator spun out of control, it hit the palm tree head-on, igniting in flames, said CHP Officer John Tyler.

Two passengers were in the car with the woman, a 19-year-old and 8-year-old; they suffered minor injuries, Tyler said.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
