Frederick, MD : Man killed, mother and baby injured in Frederick accident on Tuesday evening, November 18, 2014
A Westminster man was killed in a two-car collision near Union Bridge that left a Frederick woman and her child with minor injuries Tuesday evening, according to Maryland State Police.
Peter Provenza, 55, was driving a 1999 Chevrolet Corvette north on Md. 31 when he lost control of the car and crossed over into the southbound lane, causing the driver of a 2007 Saab to strike the Corvette on its passenger side, state police said in a news release.
The Corvette veered off the road, plunging into a field next to Md. 31 near Bessie Clemson Road.
Provenza was pronounced dead on the scene at 6:54 p.m., shortly after emergency medical crews arrived. State police arrived at 7:04 p.m., according to Master Trooper David Greenwood.
The driver of the Saab, Rachel Hiner, 29, and her 15-month-old son were taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital for treatment of small cuts on their bodies, Greenwood said. The Saab remained in the middle of the road with extensive damage to its facade.
While the cause of the crash remains under investigation by state police, the collision appears to be unrelated to the extreme cold weather or black ice on the road. Alcohol and drugs did not appear to be a factor in the crash.
“I didn’t see any alcohol, but we’ll wait on the autopsy,” Greenwood said.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner was also called to the scene.
Md. 31 was closed for two hours from Fountain School Road to Bessie Clemson Road, reopening shortly after 9 p.m, according to the release.
