Zebulon, N.C : Woman killed in fiery crash on U.S. Highway 64 in Wake County on Thursday night, April 21, 2016

Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash that occurred Thursday night in Wake County.

The crash happened around 10:30 p.m. Thursday night on U.S. Highway 64 eastbound and Shepard School Road near Zebulon.

Authorities said a witness told them they saw a 2006 Pontiac G6 traveling at a high rate of speed and weaving in and out of traffic. The car then lost control and traveled to the right side of the road and hit a tree before bursting into flames.

The crash resulted in a small fire in the woods nearby, but as quickly extinguished by emergency crews.

Authorities did not immediately release the name or age of the person killed in the crash but said the victim was a female.
