Madison County, IL : Granite City police officer injured in two-car crash on Madison Avenue, near 25th Street on Monday night, December 7, 2015

A Granite City police officer suffered a broken wrist after a 17-year-old driver collided with the officer's patrol car Monday night, authorities say. The teen suffered minor injuries.

The crash happened at about 5:30 p.m. Monday on Madison Avenue, near 25th Street.

Granite City Police Det. Lt. Mike Nordstrom said the officer was on routine patrol, not an emergency run. He was heading south on Madison.

Nordstrom said a Ford Expedition coming north on Madison hit the officer's car. Police say it appears the teen girl driving the vehicle was trying to turn left onto 25th Street.

Her vehicle came into the southbound lanes, directly in front of the squad car, and hit it head-on, police say.

The girl was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, police say. The officer went to a St. Louis hospital, where he was treated for a broken wrist and several minor injuries, police say.

The officer should be released Tuesday and undergo surgery on his wrist later in the week.

The Illinois State Police is investigating the crash. Police cited the teen driver for improper lane usage.

Police did not release the names of those involved.
