A 63-year-old motorist was killed Monday afternoon after the car she was driving on the Garden State Parkway crashed into a tree, authorities confirmed.
Summit resident Marie McNally was traveling northbound through the township when her 2013 sedan veered left out of the express lane, crashed down an embankment and finally came to rest after striking a tree, said Sergeant First Class Gregory Williams, New Jersey State Police spokesman.
Emergency personnel called to the scene extracted McNally from the vehicle, after which she was transported to Raritan Bay Medical Center for treatment for serious injuries, Williams said.
Medical officials at the hospital later pronounced McNally dead at approximately 6 p.m., Williams said.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash, Williams said. Asked if snowy conditions were a factor, Williams said only that an investigation by the state police Fatal Accident Unit into the exact cause of the crash is underway.
