Medford, OR : Multi-vehicle crash closes I-5 at Sunny Valley for hours on Friday, 6th April 2018
Two commercial tractor-trailers lost control at milepost 71 on northbound Interstate 5 at about 12:30 p.m. Friday, causing a multi-vehicle crash at the northern base of the Sexton pass in Sunny Valley, Oregon State Police said.
Five people were reportedly injured, but none seriously, police said. Fire crews were dispatched to put out a blaze that engulfed the second tractor-trailer, which was hauling junked cars bound for recycling.
Five passenger cars and four commercial vehicles were involved in the crash. Some patients were transported by ambulance, while others drove themselves, police said.
Traffic was blocked on northbound I-5 from the time of the crash until one lane re-opened around 6:45 p.m., in part because of damage to the roadway, the Oregon Department of Transportation said. Traffic was rerouted at Hugo and sent back to Grants Pass, ODOT spokesman Jared Castle said.
While traffic was blocked off, Rural Metro Fire recommended on its Facebook page that northbound travelers south of Grants Pass exit there, writing, “There are no safe alternative routes for northbound travelers.”
