SUNRISE, FL : Driver in fatal wrong-way crash was drunk in the 4400 block of North University Drive on Sunday, 24th January 2021

Police say a Tamarac man was drunk when he drove a Chevy Tahoe the wrong way down University Drive in Sunrise Saturday night and slammed into two cars, leaving one man dead.

Police weren’t releasing names Sunday, but said the 42-year-old driving the Tahoe was inebriated and driving with a suspended license as he barreled along — heading north in the southbound lanes and weaving between oncoming cars.

He crashed into a Nissan Rogue, then a Ford Flex at 11:04 p.m. in the 4400 block of North University Drive, north of Oakland Park Boulevard, said Officer Otishia Browning-Smith, a spokeswoman for the Sunrise Police Department.

“He was not even supposed to be driving,” Browning-Smith said.

The 67-year-old Sunrise man driving the Nissan was declared dead at the scene.
