Lake Wales, FL : 63-year-old woman struck and killed by a truck on Chalet Suzanne Road Thursday night, August 18, 2016

A 63-year-old woman was killed Thursday night when she was struck by a truck while riding her bicycle in Lake Wales, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said Friday.

Li Shangying, of 3755 Scenic Highway N. No. 2, was declared dead at the scene.

PCSO said she is a Chinese national, who does not appear to have any family in the country. Deputies are still trying to notify her next of kin through the Chinese embassy.

The crash occurred about 10:15 p.m. on Chalet Suzanne Road, in an area that is not well lit, reports said.

Erick Bond, 40, of Lake Wales was heading east on Chalet Suzanne Road in a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck when he tried to avoid Shangying, who was also heading east.

As he tried to maneuver his truck around her, the bicycle veered into his lane and he was unable to avoid striking it, reports said.

When the truck hit the bicycle, Shangying was ejected and then landed on a grassy shoulder of the road.

Bond and other motorists tried to help her but she had already died.

Shangying's bicycle did have a flashlight, reports said.
