Two people were killed early Sunday in a fiery crash along Highway 1 in Bodega Bay.

The pair burned to death when their car slammed into a eucalyptus tree and burst into flames, the CHP said.

They were traveling north at a high rate of speed when their Hyundai Genesis went off the road on Bodega Highway near Doran Park Road, Officer Jonathan Sloat said.

The crash was reported at 1:47 a.m. Bodega Bay firefighters responing to the scene extinguished the fire and found two bodies inside the sedan, the CHP said.

Sloat said the driver of the car apparently lost control on a curve in the road. The vehicle spun to the right and went off the east side of the road, slamming sideways into a large eucalyptus tree, Sloat said.

The car was engulfed with flames when firefighters arrived, the CHP said.

The CHP is still investigating the crash and has not not released the names of the victims.
