A 49-year-old Fort Fairfield man is dead following a one-vehicle crash Saturday morning.

Jason P. Reed was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a news release from Fort Fairfield police.

Reed was the driver and sole occupant of a black 2005 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck that struck a tree, police said.

He had been traveling north on Route 1A, north of the Bryant Pond Road, when he veered off the roadway into a ditch. The vehicle went airborne and struck the tree head on, according to police.

Reed was not wearing his seatbelt, police said.

The crash was reported at 6:10 a.m. by a passing motorist.

Sgt. Shawn Newell of the Fort Fairfield police is leading the investigation. Initial reports indicate speed was a factor in the crash, police said.

Fort Fairfield Fire Department assisted at the scene of the crash and the Maine Warden Service mapped the scene of the crash.
