Xenia Township, OH : Minivan driver in dump truck crash on Thursday afternoon, September 25, 2014
A 63-year-old Hamilton woman's defensive maneuvers likely saved her life Thursday afternoon when an overturning dump truck landed on top of her minivan.
Carl Schmedeke, 36, of Springfield, was traveling northeast on U.S. 42 in a dump truck when he came up on a car that was slowing to turn left onto Hickman Road.
"He took evasive action so he wouldn't hit that car, lost control, drove left of center, drove off the left side of the roadway and overturned," said Trooper Brad Huffman of the Xenia Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Meanwhile, Judith Sandlin was driving her minivan southwest on U.S. 42 just as the dump truck lost control, he said.
"She swerved to the right just as he was overturning and the dump truck landed partially on top of the minivan," Huffman said.
Sandlin was trapped in her vehicle for about 30 minutes until she could be freed by mechanical means from the wreckage. She was flown to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, where she was listed in serious condition Thursday night.
Huffman said she broke her wrist and suffered bruises and cuts, but not any life-threatening injuries. Huffman said when he later spoke to Sandlin, he told her she should buy a lottery ticket.
"If she hadn't (swerved), I think she would've went head-on into the overturning dump truck," he said.
Schmedeke, whose dump truck was empty, was on the way to Cedarville for another load of gravel at the time of the crash. He was cited for assured clear distance and only suffered minor scrapes and bruises, Huffman said.
