Hancock, ME : Orono man killed in Acadia motorcycle crash on Monday September 5 2016

An Orono man was killed when his motorcycle crashed into trees off Cadillac Mountain Road on Sunday after passing several cars at a high rate of speed, officials said Monday.

Investigators from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office said Abdulrahman M. Alamer, 21, was pronounced dead at Mount Desert Island Hospital after the crash, which was reported about 4:30 p.m.

Witnesses reported that Alamer, driving a red 2008 Ducati motorcycle, had crossed the road’s center line and passed several cars before returning to the downhill lane and losing control of his vehicle at a curve in the road just above the Bar Harbor overlook, officials said.

Alamer, who was wearing a helmet, went into a tree and the motorcycle stopped short of an embankment on the right side of the road, officials said.

A park ranger who arrived at the crash within five minutes reported that Alamer was alive but unresponsive. Emergency responders called for a LifeFlight helicopter and set a landing zone at an athletic field in downtown Bar Harbor, but the ambulance diverted to Mount Desert Island Hospital, officials said.

Early news reports indicated Alamer was a University of Maine student from Saudi Arabia.

Uphill traffic on the road was halted for about 2½ hours by the crash, officials said.
