Cortland County, NY : One dead, one injured in a crash with a tractor-trailer on Route 90 in the Town of Homer on Thursday, September 22, 2016

Police say a man who was traveling the wrong way was killed in a crash with a tractor-trailer in Cortland County.

New York State Police responded to a 911-reported crash on Route 90 in the Town of Homer around 8:45 a.m. on Thursday.

The driver of a 2010 Subaru Impreza, identified as Ronald W. Reed, 61, of Cortland, was declared dead at the scene.

Police said the second driver was Michael A. Gross, 48, of Norwich, who operated a 2013 Freightliner tractor-trailer hauling a tanker filled with whey. He was transported to Upstate Medical for non-life threatening injuries after the crash.

Both men were the sole occupants of their respective vehicles.

Police said Reed was traveling south on Route 90 when he drifted into the northbound lane and struck the tractor-trailer, heading northbound.

The Subaru spun off the southbound shoulder and came to rest, according to a police report.

The Freightliner crossed over the southbound lanes and came to rest in a swamp area off the shoulder. Diesel fuel spilled onto the roadway from the Freightliner and some of the cargo spilled into the swamp area, police said.

NYS DEC Spill Response responded to the scene. The NYSP Collision Reconstruction Unit and the NYSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit assisted with the investigation.

Police said an autopsy was scheduled Friday at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton.
