New Iberia, LA : Bossier City man died in Fiery 2-vehicle crash on U.S. 90 Service Road and Jefferson Island Road on Friday morning, July 8, 2016
State Police said a New Iberia man was uninjured after a car driven by a Bossier City man crossed into his lane and hit the tractor-trailer rig he was driving head-on Friday morning near the intersection of U.S. 90 Service Road and Jefferson Island Road.
The crash took the life of Rakeem Blakes, 24, of Bossier City.
Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating the two-vehicle fatality crash shortly before 10:15 a.m. It occurred on the eastbound U.S. 90 Service Road at Jefferson Island Road in Iberia Parish. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Blakes was driving a 2006 Ford Explorer eastbound on the service road and failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway. Blakes crossed over into the westbound lane and struck a 1990 Kenworth operated by Billy Romero, 69, of New Iberia.
Because Blakes’ vehicle caught fire, it is unknown if he was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, the report said.
Blakes suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Iberia Parish Coroner’s Office. Romero was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.
A toxicology sample was taken from Blakes and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
Romero voluntarily submitted to a chemical breath test, State Police said. His results indicated he was not impaired, State Police said.
While investigating the fatal crash, troopers received information that Blakes was involved in a hit-and-run crash along U.S. 90 near the Broussard area. Troopers are continuing their investigation into the cause of the fatal crash, along with following up on information obtained about the hit-and-run crash.
The Broussard Police Department administrative office was not open Saturday to determine if Blakes was involved in the crash there.
