Bluefield,WV : Mercer County woman dies after Virginia crash on June, Sunday 11th 2017

A Mercer County woman has died from her injuries after a weekend crash in Russell County, Va., a representative of the Virginia State Police said Tuesday.

A crash was reported approximately 4:45 a.m. Sunday on Route 19 in Russell County, according to Susan Rowland, public relations coordinator for the Virginia State Police. Trooper S.A. Sutherland was dispatched to the scene. The crash was near the Tazewell County, Va. border in the vicinity of Southwest Virginia Community College, according to a dispatcher with the Virginia State Police in Wytheville, Va.

A 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe traveling north on Route 19 near Green Hill Road swerved to avoid an animal in the road, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle, Rowland said. The SUV ran off the right side of the road, overcorrected then overturned, striking a parked tractor-trailer.

Cynthia R. Panashy, 26, of Bluefield, who was a passenger in the vehicle, suffered serious injuries. She succumbed to those injuries en route via Med-Flight to Bristol Regional Medical Center, Rowland stated.

The driver – Austin M. Stone-Caldwell, 22, of Princeton– suffered serious injuries and was taken by Med-Flight to Bristol Regional Medical Center. The second passenger – Coridy J. Whaley, 23, of Columbus, Ga. – sustained minor injuries. He was transported to Clinch Valley Medical Center.

None of the individuals in the SUV were wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, Rowland said. Charges are pending, and the crash remains under investigation.
