Charlotte, NC : 11-year-old girl struck and killed by vehiclein west Charlotte on Wednesday, July 13, 2016

An 11-year-old girl was killed when she was struck by a vehicle in west Charlotte Wednesday, according to police.

The incident happened just after 5:30 on the 2300 block of West Boulevard. Officials said the girl, whose name has not been released, was trying to cross the street with another juvenile relative when she was struck by a Honda Ridgeline.

The girl was taken to Carolinas Medical Center where she was later pronounced deceased. The girl's relative was not injured.

Investigators said the girl was not crossing the street at an intersection or marked crosswalk. The driver of the Honda was unable to avoid hitting the 11-year-old, police said, but stayed at the scene until officers arrived.

Police said neither speed nor alcohol use contributed to the crash, and no charges have been filed.

West Boulevard was closed between Ridge Avenue and Morning Drive while investigators worked at the scene. Drivers were asked to avoid the area if possible.
